Post by: Maduh on July 15, 2013, 06:53:10 AM
I dunno why we don't have a thread where we can whore out recent photos of our msm's. So lets start one!

Here's mine from last weekend.

While I agree... Keeping this car clean is a lot of work. Every single little scratch shows. It drives me crazy.

So for Round 2, let's add a hone, piston rings, crank, one rod, and while we're at it, a nice port job on the head (inlets and bowls), FM valvespring kit, M-Tuned reroute, TSE radiator, and other goodies. Like Santa, this time we'll be torquing it down and checking it twice.

So in other words your rebuilt engine lost bearings and scored the crank already??

Who is this building your engine???

Single bearing, just cylinder 1, the others were no lie, perfect. Main bearings as well.

Not sure what could happen on cylinder 1 to cause that. Only thing I can think of would be maybe residual metal in turbo that was not cleaned, or the factory oil cooler. All things being replaced this time around though, and my tuner and I are doing assembly and clearances ourselves.

Lost my bumper and put a decent size dent in my intercooler. My town is redoing one of their main streets and hasn't finished paving the final layer so the manholes sit high about 2-3 inches. Normally I avoid them but stuck between traffic and hit one. Tore the bumper clean off. No real damage to the bumper other then the plastic clips being ripped out and a scrap mark on the underside. Plus the dent in my IC. I should be able to have the bumper back on pretty easy.

Put in a claim with the city and get it covered. I had 2 OEM wheels replaced after proving they were factory wheels and the cars suspension was not altered or part of the cause. Took about 6 months but 2 wheels and tires were covered due to poor road maintenance.

Looking at your sig I can understand the need for a big wing.  However, may I suggest some front aero to restore balance?  In theory a C4/C5 Corvette-style front airdam could help a lot.  There are other, more extensive options too.

Suggestion noted and something I already knew.  Have something in the works already.  Being here in So.Cal there are 949 and miata challenge guys that has given me advice on what works, not theories.  Thanks you for your suggestions on what I already know.

I just came in here to post a picture of the MSM as it currently sits.  I never claim to know everything.  It may rub off the wrong way but it wasn't my intentions.  He thought I didn't either know or wasn't working on front aero to balance my setup.

Also when advice is given to me by more experienced members SMR, 95MSM,etc on advice such as reflashes, etc.  I take their advice because they have experience, like those at 949 racing because they know what works.  I don't go against their advice, then when things go wrong and blame a vendor.  Your just as much at fault as the vendor especially when EXPERIENCED members has already told you the risk and you still go against their advice.  We already know your track record.  I have seen your complaint on mt.net and m.net.   ::)

BTW,  next time you ask me questions or pictures on how to mount a 14 spal fan, DO SOME RESEARCH.  I didn't need pictures, I had to research on forums and make custom brackets.

I didn't mean to offend by suggesting front aero. I'm glad you have great local support to help you. I wonder what the response would have been if I'd said my first thought: it reminds me of a civic with only that big bolt-on wing.

Not offended at all.  I just came to post a picture of my MSM just like thread stated.
I'm not the only miata running a wing like this here. Difference between a civic with a big wing and mine is,  I do my best to put it to use.
There are a bunch of things I am slowly doing to the MSM to get it where I want it to be.

Girlfriend and I are moving in together next week. We were out shopping last night and I somehow got on the topic of my car (it's staying at my parent's garage nearby and not my new place which is outside parking only). I said "I could really use a car cover so if my parents are in the garage and bump into it it doesn't get scratched. Also we have some moisture in the ceiling and it might collapse". Came downstairs this morning before work to find this (left hood up overnight). Lesson learned. Don't speak car stuff, just buy car stuff  ;D

Luckily everything came off, but I have a feeling if my hood was shut it may have caused a dent (the top of the hood broke it apart luckily)

Great shots, credit to the photographer?

Local guy named Zach, that started taking photos at our auto crosses this year. I believe the guy owns an NA miata.

Here's another, same car, same photographer(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y199/BiGx5MurF/IMG_75081837998174_zpspskqfuz0.jpeg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/BiGx5MurF/media/IMG_75081837998174_zpspskqfuz0.jpeg.html)

That shine is insane! what did you do to it? Polish/wax?  would love my VR to look like that  :tool:

It was a fresh sunny day so that helps. But ya. Wash,  Claybar, then meguiars three step (compound, polish, and wax) with a polisher and the appropriate pads.

You should see my black maxima after. It's ridiculous.

The polish really adds depth. I detail cars on the weekends and have never had any complaints!

compound polish and wax being like, the 105 and 205 stuff? or just megs ultimate rubbing compound and polish? I have a polisher and megs ultimate lineup, just havent had the time to put in all the work. your car looks great though, and im almost certain i'll be putting in the elbow grease after my 600 mile road trip to FL to bring out the shine in mine!

good work again!

I would recommend doing it before to protect your car.  Plus it will be nice and shiny for the trip! It's not the pro stuff just regular three step.  Do it right and take the time, great results! Good luck.

Unless it's an official timed track event or a real race most groups in this area allow any clothing because of the heat.  The only requirement is closed toe shoes.  Shorts sleeves and even shorts are acceptable.

I had a friend who owed me a favor detail my car today.  His process was a wash, Iron X, clay bar, wash, and a coat of CarPro Cquartz sealer.  The beading action from the sealer is unreal.  He didn't polish the front bumper for fear of making the many rock chips worse than they already are.

I sent the owner a message at 11pm on a weeknight on Facebook and he responded 10min later with a shipping quote and they were at my house 5 days later.

They currently have a sale going on their +20 offset wheels. But those will be super aggressive looking. I got the +32.

Total shipped was like $630. Same weight as 6uls and they are that new flow formed casting.

Well I don't daily my car but I drive it every weekend pretty much. I actually don't mind the seat comfort. I actually think they are pretty damn comfy when sitting since it holds me in all the right places.

The only pain is getting in and out and having to move the harness around every time. But once I'm in its not bad at all.

Way more comfortable then my old Elise seats I had.

Haha, here in phoenix, it's more like "cruising in the morning with the top down... and it's still 95 degrees outside at 5 am."
No snow in the winter though, so I'll deal with it :)

I need to do this fog light mod in the FAQ section. It is a bummer when a car doesn't allow independent fog usage--aka almost every new car I see at my dealership these days. My GTO did it and I loved the look.

BEAUTIFUL!!!  Looks like a "glamour shot".   thumup

I removed the front MSM lip cause it was starting to come off anyways. Dunno if I wanna put it back on, tbh I've never really liked it to begin with. Might pick up a touge run lip or something.

Great looking car, i'm surprised they let you guys run in short sleeves.
All our motorsport events have a minimum of head to toe non synthetic or fire resistant clothing.

I've never heard of an autocross with a dress code.

Another auto-x down and I placed 1st in Novice with 2nd place 2 seconds behind me.  That means I get placed into BSP early!  I was 0.2 seconds off the fastest BSP time this round, which makes me think there isn't much local competition in the class after looking at the few BSP build threads on this forum.  I can say that I am having a ton of fun though.  thump

At my most recent autocross.

Tonight I found why my car feels so loose.  I went to adjust the rear sways, but they were full loose, so I grudgingly decided to tighten the fronts.  And I found this

Well, don't know what to say other than I'm bummed. The spoiler is the same way, but it was that way when I bought it. Most of the clearcoat had peeled back on the spoiler. I'm the 3rd owner, and my guess is the previous 2 just didn't wash it much. The guy before me had to drive it on about 2 miles of dirt road every day for his job, so I'm sure it ALWAYS needed a wash.

Clear coat shouldn't peel because the car is dirty

If that was the case every car I owned would be peeled and the only one I have with peeling clear coat is the fender on my dually that had a lousy paint repair job done on it by a local body shop.

That would be news to me. I promise you though, the car isn't THAT fast. I've driven some fast cars and while the msm is the fastest car I've ever owned, I'm sure it will never beat the fastest car I've driven.

The POs told me the rear spoiler clear coat had failed and they had it repainted.  I haven't had any other problem, but it usually sits in a garage under a cover.

I wouldn't be surprised if the car still had paintwork even with no carfax history. Anything that isn't done through insurance and on the owner's own accord wouldn't show up on the report. Furthermore, it could be reported to Autocheck for instance, but not Carfax.

Do you have matching VIN stickers on the fenders and the hood? How about the trunklid?

Rainy day at the track this weekend... None-the-less still loads of fun. Got to run around with my buddies' 350zs all day and show them the power of miata! We're all novice driver's so it was great experience. I put 124 miles on my car solely on the track.

Rolling in.

Yes, that is a BAW.(Big-ass-wang)

The rain shook a few people up and there we're 3 accidents. No on was hurt thankfully. A BMW lost it in turn 2 and spun off into a tire wall. My buddy following him in his 350 hit the same spot and spun, colliding into the bmw already in the wall. I came around just a car behind them too see 2 wheels on track, my buddies car in a ditch and the back half of a bmw in the wall. It was crazy!

Plus I got to hangout with Dave, the guy behind Kmiata all day since he was my instructor. Very interesting comparing my turbo miata to his n/a k24 swapped miata. We make about the same HP, I make more torque, but he revs to 9k rpms. Plus he's lighter. Let me tell you, that thing is ridiculously fast...

It's a very odd looking turbo, I don't think I've ever seen such a large variance in size from hotside to coldside

I have. But that happens when you work around turbine engines and get prototype turbochargers in your hands every once in a while :-) I can still admire the competition's hardware.

Walking back to my car from the grocery store and that LO paint put a smile on my face. I think it's a year next month that I bought the car.

I went to look at this hardtop today, and the owner was kind enough to let me try it on. I'm most likely going to purchase it. Figured I would post it up because I had trouble finding a good picture of a Ti Gray Mazdaspeed Miata with a black hardtop.

I'm about 90% sure I will. Just need to save a little more. The top is in beautiful shape, and agree that it looks great. Not sure if it would look better painted to match, but I have my doubt that the color would match perfect without blending.

Off topic for this thread... but I just deduced that this top is a "Snugtop," not OEM. It is however in real nice shape. About how much are they worth?

Title: Re: Most Recent Shots of Your MSM!
Post by: SilverMiataRacer on November 15, 2014, 09:13:37 PM
A lot less than an OEM and you should be very careful of it's condition.  They were not very well made in the beginning and i have no idea if they have ever improved.  Check very around the latches and catches for signs of cracking.

Thanks for the input, SMR. I'm planning on offering him about half of what i would pay for an oem top in similar condition. The latches on Snugtops are known for being thin and flimsy. I planned on using spec miata brackets anyway. I will closely inspect around the stress points for signs of cracking. It looked to be in beautiful shape when I saw it the other day, but if/when I see it again i'm going to do a much more thorough inspection. It wasn't until today that I deduced it was non-oem.

What made you think it was not Oem?

How did he list it or describe it?

Title: Re: Most Recent Shots of Your MSM!
Post by: jdem5 on November 16, 2014, 04:43:51 PM
He hasn't listed it at all, but describes it as OEM because the P.O. told him he bought it new w/his car.

I'm about 99% sure it is not OEM, with evidential support from Miata.net's hardtop FAQ. It has real cheap and thin latches, has a warning label on the interior, has glued in seals, and doesn't have Nippon glass. From the research I've done these are all evidence that it's a Snugtop, especially the latches.

I was still interested in it but we were unable to make a deal. I've been told that 50% of the value of an equivalent OEM top is the absolute most you want to pay. He wanted $850 for it, I offered him $500, which was probably about $100 too much. He declined the offer. I am super dissappointed because my car looked fantastic with it and could have bolted in spec miata brackets and had a nice budget set-up. Still, I wasn't going to give him more than it's worth.

I did not author this thread, but there are some useful pics in there for those interested in the differences between Snugtop and OEM.

Might as well order them now since there seems to be long waiting lists anymore. My buddy ordered his 15x8 a while ago and still doesn't have them  :'(

I'm kind of over the 6UL. There's a lot of other options in the same size and offset now, and the lower costs and higher availability make them a bit more attractive, plus the different designs. I love mine still, but they were basically the only thing available in that size and offset when I got em.

Took a nice cruise over to GMR, (Glendora Mountain Road) here in Souther California. Top down of course in ~45* weather.

There was people drifting at the top where the 3 roads meet up haha

A newer subie hatch was leaving as I was and we both had a go in the canyon, he pulled over and let me pass and he chased me down  gave each other a thumbs up at the end!

I was planning on squeezing 1 or 2 more autocrosses out of my worn and heat cycled 225/45 RS3's, but after a couple spectacular spin outs last weekend I realized it was time to put them to pasture.  I got about 9k street miles and about 50-60 autocross runs out of them before they were toast.  Since Tire Rack has had no 225/45 RS3's or Rivals available for about 2.5 months now with no real ETA, I decided to step up to the new 245/40 Maxxis RC-1's.

On the way to the tire shop.

With the 245's on 9's you will definitely need to have the fenders rolled if you plan on doing any aggressive driving.

That all depends on how low your car is.  With my current ride height (12" hub to fender in front) I'm pretty confident there will be no rubbing after a fender roll.  I'm not sure about rubbing on the front fender liners or inside fender wells yet, but I'll report back if that is an issue.  I just went out and snapped some pics to better show the clearance before the fenders are rolled.

I only plan on driving these to and from autocross events.  If I want to drive it during the week I'll put the stock 17's back on, or I might buy a set of the new 15x8 RPF1's with some 205/50's.

My fenders have been rolled, quite well I might add, no paint cracking anywhere, and now the 245's fit with zero issues.  On the two very short drives I took from the tire shop and then to the fender roller, the rear tires did rub ever so slightly on the inner fender lip, now they are good to go.  I had him do a slight pull in the front and trim the liners, along with the roll just incase I ever decide to lower it a tad more.

I ran my 15x9 c3m's for about a year with the stock Bilsteins.  The 225/45's will rub on the springs at full lock on stock Bilsteins.

I think the consensus is that 15x9 C3s will not fit with OEM Bilsteins. Any confirmations?

I ran my 15x9 c3m's for about a year with the stock Bilsteins.  The 225/45's will rub on the springs at full lock on stock Bilsteins.

but as far as spirited driving, autox, highway driving etc... no issues? just at full lock ie- in a parking lot?

Thank you.  I am in Orlando.  I've always wanted to do white letters but told myself I'd hold off until I got some real racing tires.  I don't think I will ever do it again because I have almost 3 hours into the letters now with having to touch them up after getting them mounted.

No issues with spirited driving, auto-x, or highway for me.  The only time they rub is actually driving in reverse, full lock at parking speeds.  For some reason they dont rub driving forwards.

You will notice that with the c3m's the clearance between the banjo bolt holding the brake line to the caliper is maybe a couple credit cards worth of clearance to the inner barrel of the wheel.  Its up to you whether or not you are comfortable running them like that, or buying the special short banjo bolts that FM sells.  I have been running with the stock bolts with no issues so far, the clearance is scary tight though.

Thats awesome! What tow-hook is that? Do you have the singular motorsports hood vents?

Title: Re: Most Recent Shots of Your MSM!

The tow hook is a Ryoku Rob rear NB hook.  I do have the Singular hood vents, and I'll only be installing the side vents and painting them black, just waiting to cut into my hood.    I'll also be buying Singular's ECU bracket this spring to fit the MS3 I plan to order as well.

I couldn't stomach the price of their vents when I know how cheap waterjet cutting is... so I drew up my own and got it cut and I'm planning on installing it soon. It's not as R&D'd as theirs, but it only cost me $20 instead of almost $200. The other thing is I'm making a plate that can attach on the inside and seal for rainy days. It doesn't rain much here in arizona, but when it does it can really pour, and this car is my DD.

I got in on the original group buy, and I already sold the center vent, so I'm into them for about $125.  I'm interested to see what you came up with!  Your stuff always looks great.

I picked mine up from a member on CR.net who never installed it.  Rob seems to do a group buy once a year for his tow hooks over on CR.net, then all the extras are sold through Project-G, so keep an eye out over there for this years group buy.

Also, I know GR_MSM on this forum has a black one that I'm pretty sure he took off of his car.  You could try PMing him to see if he'd want to part with it.

I just was contacted by David at Rennmetal.  He is shutting the business because of personal issues, like not enough time in life to run a side business.  Terrible shame as his products were top shelf and I've been waiting for his C6 Corvette tow hooks for a year now.   :'(

Thanks! I'll post pictures once it's in. It's just a center vent for behind the radiator. I might do more later that go on the sides, but my center vent is much larger than the singular one. Probably double the size if I had to guess. My clear coat is peeling on my hood so I don't feel too bad about cutting it up.

Early morning last Sunday at the Martin Sports Car Club autocross.  That GTS has a $9k set of carbon fiber wheels.  Highlights of the day were me taking 1st in BSP (again), and I also had faster times than that Viper, a Gallardo 550-2, and a GTR, which made me very happy.  :D  The Gallardo was the closest at 0.1 seconds behind me.  ~200hp and sticky tires with a somewhat decent driver in a Miata is fun stuff.

Vipers have the best hoods.
Id love to be able to buy a hood like that for our car.
Chaser makes a nice looking hood...just a shame the quality and fitment sux.  >:(

There is a local guy here in Orlando with the chaser hood.  He had to remove his strut tower brace to fit it, and I believe cut the hood to fit over the hotside piping.

The only rubbing I ever get is backing up with the steering wheel locked one direction, which I got before with the 225's anyway.  The tires are great, though it did take me 2 events to get used to them fully.  Now I'm not sure if I could ever go back to RS3's lol.

Right on all accounts.  I wish I had a black hardtop...

One day, I'll have the surround actually painted black because I love the look. Reminds me of a 599 GTO. Plus a few NC special editions have had the surround painted black, as well as a few ND's I've seen.

I run NT-01's and one of those sets are my OEM rims on Star Specs.  I take them along in case it rains.  I have 2 sets of NT01's on 6UL rims.  I run one set until a tire cords.  I then swap to the other set and run those until one cords.  I then swap around the remaining ones until I have 4 dead ones and order a new set while continuing to work on the well used ones.  Two sets usually last a year to a year and a half with my wife and I both driving.

I want to paint the the hardtop and trunk lid with rattle can matching paint, but haven't gotten around to it.  The hardtop is close from a distance, but is a cheap faded paint job from the previous owner.  He is not exactly mechanically inclined and am surprised he attempted to paint it.  It's close enough and not high on the priority list at the moment.

I went to a 2 day autocross event at Daytona Speedway over the weekend.  Saturday was practice and Sunday was for points.  We were driving on a go kart track on the infield by turn 4.  There were also club races going on all weekend on the big track, and we were fortunate enough to all be invited to do a couple parade laps on Saturday!  However, the fun was short lived when two Mustangs decided it would be a good idea to run side by side on the 32 degree banks going about 130mph.  The 2 cars were kicked out and told not to come back, and we weren't allowed to do a parade lap on Sunday because of it.   >:(

Here is an aerial view of the go kart track by turn 4.

On Saturday I ended up taking the FOTD for a street car for the first time out of 60 drivers, which felt pretty good!  The second fastest car of the day was a new C7 Z06, which was about 0.05 seconds behind me.  The Ti MSM took the 3rd fastest time of the day on Saturday.  The VR MSM was about 3 seconds behind us, but he is also still on the stock 17's.  We also had a BMW Z3 and an S2000 in our class, but they couldn't keep up!  Even though the S2000 was on 18x11.5's and 315 Hoosiers, I think he was having some issues because he didn't even complete all of his runs...

Sunday rolled around and all of the really fast drivers showed up.  We ran a slightly modified course in the opposite direction for Sunday, and the Ti MSM ended up beating me by about 0.1 seconds.  :help: Oh well, first 2nd place I've gotten since the beginning of the year.

That really great about your successful weekend.  Daytona is such a great place too.  We went to the 1999 Miata event there and got to drive parade laps which they took very seriously.  They had track "police" on motorcycles pacing with us to keep us off the banking and under the speed, I think it was 40 MPH.

Title: Re: Most Recent Shots of Your MSM!
Post by: ozbrock on May 04, 2015, 03:21:12 PM
The parade laps were kind of a last minute thing, and we were not instructed well on what the rules were and how to handle the banks.  It was basically almost a blind parade lap.  We did have a pace car that was going 60-70 (on the banks), and he did lead us all up onto the banks.   We actually had about 100 cars doing the parade lap, and some of the drivers were slowing down on the straights and then bombing the turns as well.  Thats how the mustangs were able to reach the speeds they did.  I did have my camera in its mount recording this entire thing, with me in the background just saying wow over and over again.

Not the best picture. The range behind the car is actually 50 yards. Colt 6271 pictured, did alright. Once I had it at 100 yards, it was useless. I really want to take the carry handle off and put a scope on it, the .233 and 5.56 do really well long range.

Went to another autocross with Martin Sports Car Club in Tavares, FL.  I let my friend co-drive my car since he currently has a bad manifold leak due to a broken/missing stud.  We were the only 2 drivers in BSP, and he had me by 0.6 up until my last run I got him by 0.019 seconds!

A VR with some serious cooling mods and an FMII.  Hood louvers, FM crossflow and fans, ducting, oil cooler, coolant re-route (stock MSM head gasket) and he says its still not enough to keep it cool on track.

^^^Probably because that's the wrong headgasket for the coolant re-route. 949Racing says you can use it but the 94-00 is a better option.

01-05 owners: Mazda changed the head gasket design for these years to restrict flow to the #1 cylinder to help alleviate the cooling issues. The 01-05 OEM gasket works fine with the reroute but will work even better with the BP26-10-271 gasket from the 94-00 engine. So if you are rebuilding your 01-05 VVT engine, consider the 94-00 head gasket.

Mods are in my sig, Tein Flex with 9kg/7kg rates, and I also disconnected the rear swaybar to help with the tail-happiness with those 9kg/7kg spring rates.  Some of that tail-happiness might be attributed to the on/off switch that is my right foot.

Since you seem to be the PlastiDip expert.....what is the best way to address an edge when painting?  I have played with PD a couple of times, and was never really sure the best way to work with an edge that you have taped off.  For example, if you decided to stripe the hood or something similar.  You would tape off the stripes and then paint between the tape.  Would you pull the tape off just after painting or how/when do you get the tape off? Previously, I have let it all dry and cut along the edge of the tape with a razor blade, but that wouldn't work well if painting over a finished surface.

Anything with a taped edge should be peeled off while the dip is still wet.  Don't saturate the areas your dipping, build up the layers slowly.  On the last few coats, go a little thicker, peel up the tape before anything dries, allow the last layer to soften the previous layers to get a clean line when the tape is removed.

How long do you wait between layers?  Or do you just keep building up with thin layers one after another.  In the past, I have painted a first coat and then waited a while (30 minutes or so) before a second or third coat.

15-20 mins between coats.  first 2-3 coats are very lite coats.

Thanks.  I would have thought that waiting that long between coats would cause the PD to come up with you peeled the tape off.  I'll give it a try next time I am looking to paint something.

Title: Re: Most Recent Shots of Your MSM!
Post by: ozbrock on September 18, 2015, 09:38:36 PM
I have a feeling I'm not too far behind you on those studs...  I've had to re-tighten a couple of the nuts on my manifold 3 times in the last 3 months.  Granted, the car only gets driven on weekends, but at least half of those weekends have been spent auto crossing.

We would love some more competition, because there isn't really much to begin with in BSP.  Its usually only Justin and I, sometimes a Golf R, BMW Z3/M3, S2000, and random MSMs show up.  But, they are rarely fast enough for 1st or 2nd.

I've been trying to go to one of the Brooksville autocross events, but something always comes up, or I work and can't go. It's pretty annoying at times lol. I may have to try at one of the OCCC events one of these times too. I'm stock though, so I'd be in a different class anyway. Here's my car as of today:

We were at the track this past weekend and we stay at the track.  Instead of another beer and some relaxation after the Saturday night BBQ social, I had to investigate a braking noise and swap out the vacuum lines related to the MBC.  The infield is really dark at night, so when I noticed the tech shed lights were on, I decided it would be the best place to work on the car.  Level concrete and lights are a definite plus.  When my wife wasn't lending a hand, she snapped a couple of pics.  The photos haven't been altered in any way and were taken with her I-Phone.  The lighting makes for a really neat scene.

Took 1st in BSP over the weekend by 4 hundredths!  FTOD for Street Prepared as well.  I am back on fresh RS3's, but my RC-1's did last me a whole year of autocross and about 5000 miles of street driving.  The 2nd place MSM was on fresh RC-1's, and he also has AFCO's, a bigger front sway bar, a Hydra w/7.5k rev limit, and more camber.  I was quite surprised to take 1st!  That Golf R is also over 400hp with many expensive add-ons.

Nice work! There was a good photographer at my track event, but until I buy these photos which I'm still sorting through, I can only share the links, so I hope you don't mind clicking. Some of the photos are of an off-road adventure proving you need more than street pads to stop a 140mph Miata

Also if anyone was on the fence about the 245/40-15x10, you can see it DOES work, and after that rallycross section of track, I only have one small groove cut from the front fender-to-bumper metal tab which I already bent away.

Philly, that off looks like an invitation to soil your pants! I hope everything was alright afterwards.  I'm actually going to my first PDX this Sunday at Daytona Speedway, and I'm putting on some stainless lines a a fresh flush of Motul RBF600.  I think my R4S pads will be ok.

Rick, yes that was the cfrsolo event at OCCC.  Martin Sports Car Club is having an event at OCCC as well on the 10th, registration closes on the 8th. http://www.martinscc.org (http://www.martinscc.org)  I will be in Daytona at the PDX on the 10th though.  Here's a link to cfrsolo's site as well, I'll be at most of the events for both of these clubs this year. http://cfrsolo2.com (http://cfrsolo2.com)

humming, it's an EZ Lip.  I had a TrackDog, but I bumped the curb to many times, so I had to remove it.  I like the looks of the TD better, but the EZ Lip is much more forgiving.

EZ Lip, EZ Lip Pro or Rhino Lip?

Anybody have experience with the Pro or the Rhino Lip?

I can't tell for sure.  Do you have it installed on all 4 sides?

I like the look on your car.  Mine is Mica Black.  I think it would look OK on a black car.

I just went with the basic EZ Lip.  I wasn't sure if I would like the it.  I really like that it curves to the shape of the lower lip.  I just applied it to the front and there was about 3' remaining.  I held it up to the side and really don't care for it.

There is another product out there that is more durable. The EZ Lip can rip, but I have bumped into a few high curved sidewalks, and have not had any problem with it.

I think you Mica Black would look great with it.

Here are some close up shots.

I went to my first instructed PDX event this past Sunday at Daytona Speedway, and had an absolute blast!  We had 4 20 minute sessions, and and my power steering pump started to go out about halfway through the first session, and by the end of that first session I had a fine mist of PS fluid on my windshield from the drivers side Singular louver.  Which is apparently an added bonus of the louvers; diagnosing leaky parts under your hood while on track.  My instructor and I ended up spending most of the 2nd session trying to find the leak, and eventually tracing it to the pump.  I was ready to call it a day, but my instructor basically called me a you know what and grabbed me by the shoulders and shook me violently and exclaimed that he was having so much fun riding in my car and that all we needed to do was take off the belt for PS/AC and finish the day like men.  So, we did, an I am so glad he talked me into it.  I did not give a single point by the entire day, but i received dozens.

Was it really the pump leaking or was it pumping out of the fill tank??  I've not seen a bad pump but have seen the fluid come out the filler.  Solutions for that is to run the fluid a little low, wrap the unit with a rag and cover with a plastic bag fastened well.

The pump was screaming like a banshee and PS was cutting in and out, fluid was very milky with air bubbles.  We were pretty sure it was the front seal on the pump.  First session there was definitely fluid coming out of the filler tank, but the 3 laps i ran on 2nd session the tank was dry and the pump was covered in fluid.  I'm about to take it apart now for a closer look.

Title: Re: Most Recent Shots of Your MSM!
Post by: SilverMiataRacer on April 14, 2016, 07:56:08 PM
Could it be you ran the pump dry and burned it up??  If you were losing fluid out the filler and it got low and the pump was trying to pump nothing???  I ask because a PS pump failure is rare, as in I can't remember the last time I heard of one failing.

Title: Re: Most Recent Shots of Your MSM!
Post by: ozbrock on April 14, 2016, 10:01:15 PM
Well we made sure the filler tank was topped off with new fluid when we went out for 3 laps on the 2nd session.  Brought it back to the pits after that and the outside of the tank looked dry, but there was fluid pooling on the top of the AC compressor under the PS pump.

I just swapped on a new (used) pump and did a complete flush with Redline fluid, and it is quiet and smooth as can be.  I am however pretty embarrassed for not flushing this system sooner, the fluid that came out looked like chocolate milk...  :buck2:

The whole situation is odd.  I'm not sure what explains the color of the fluid.  Any idea if some "special fluid" had been put in at some point by a previous owner??

I bought some huge syringes cheap off ebay and I have one with some small clear hose attached, I suck PS fluid out of the reservoir and top it up with new stuff.   Not as good as a complete flush but it's very quick and easy and I do it way more often than needed. Seems to work well.

Still waiting to meet up with one of my photo friends one warm day for some real photos. The brakes generate so much dust that usually by the time I get anywhere, I have to re-clean the wheels  ;D

You have the coolest car with the crappiest pics, I have the crappiest car with the best equipment for pics..... Maybe we should get together one day lol
Haha if only, I can't find many MSM owners around me.  I'm one of those "Instagram" photographers where the filters make up for what the photo lacks hahaha

Workin on a small project with the car now. Got a spare MSM trunk with no spoiler for $20 yesterday.

Man if I could only join this party, I have a RED Dragon sitting in my studio. I think pics are good but we need more MSM video. Too bad my car is just horrible to look at until I paint it, I didn't have experience building a car when I started my project and I ended up with every different color of parts. Black trunk, silver top, non-painted diffuser and air splitter, etc...

Right now I'm deciding on a paintjob 3k-$4k or a Big brake kit and GT3 Rollbar 3k-$3.5k I don't know yet and I've been thinking about it for months now....

Why don't you plastidip the car?  It might be a decent compromise on the paint and you could always save up for a good paint job down the road.

I think you might be right, I was considering rattle can painting the different colored parts for now until I could find a reliable shop that can do a good job, I have the money for it I just don't like the results I've gotten from the shops I've used in the past.

So I definitely don't know everything, but i can tell you that MillsJ made an excellent suggestion to me on brakes which was cheap centric rotors, and good Carbotech (G-Loc) pads, holy crap! I had Hawk HPS pads on it and thought they were OK, but after putting these on, the difference is incredible. Can save you a bunch of money vs a BBK

Second on the idea to plastic dip the car. Will cost you a few hundred dollars (200-300 I assume) and will look decent. 3-4k for paint seems really steep, even if its the VR color.

I do like the BBFW roll bar, but compared to a Harddog, it is IIRC 2x as much money, only 4 or 8lbs lighter, and the gussets they use I believe don't really help with visibility.

That's just my 2 cents, but both of your figures (3-4k for paint, 3-3.5k for brakes and roller) seem really steep. Worst case scenario, a BBK is like 1000 (which its less than that), and I was quoted around 1200 or 1400 for the BBFW GT3 Bar. Paint wise, my friend had Maaco (with employees he knew and trusted) spray his NA Miata into Subaru World Rally Blue, looks really nice, and he paid $1500 for the whole paint job but did his own prep.

edit: just looked at your build thread and honestly the trunk doesn't look bad on there. Do you want me to keep an eye open for a VR Trunk on my side of the country? I wouldn't mind shipping it to you if I did find something, but not sure how easy it would be to find a wingless VR trunk. What I'm gonna do for my project trunk (Ti MSM trunk with no spoiler) is go to a few vinyl shops and find one with the closest vinyl and get them to just cut me small circles I can stick over the holes. I would definitely change the color of the top, Black works with everything. Buddy ran out of clear so its a bit "spotty" looking but that will get finished up

Or you could look into having it wrapped. A reputable company will make it look nice. And you don't have to worry about repairing tears, like plasti-dip gets. My brother had a quote of $1500 to get his '02 Dakota quad-cab wrapped. And that comes with some sort of lifetime warranty.

I wouldn't quite be me if I didn't post a crappy cell-phone pic every so often. New spoiler is on, now need to build the front end

Yes, I did manage to find a spoiler-less TI MSM trunklid locally. I do still have the factory one sitting in my garage with the stock spoiler untouched. Once I get the level set on this, I might sell that lid off as I really like the look and it's not obnoxious like a big wing for the occasional driving I do. I need to drill a few more holes in the lexan to get the thing to sit a little flatter. Right now it's as low as it can go. Usually the BBFW spoiler comes with 3 holes for each mounting location to help with the height, not sure why mine only came with 1 for each

Got a high quality pic, but now you can't see my car   the games continue. This is from the track day that rained out for me, was just doing some pre-run checks before the gates opened. I'm the guy leaning on my own bumper.

God I love the lines of the MSM even when they're mostly obstructed. Hopefully I won't hate the look of the bumper I'm about to build. Also have to say I think the 245/40-15x10 is THE size for an NB for looks AND performance without cutting fenders or adding flares.

Clean MSM Vlad..  .  It's probably never even been farted in.

I nearly started a Holy War with Ambit about that.  ;D   I have what can be considered a full-on dissertation, complete with photos, screenshots, etc that I made just to string them up if need-be.  I let it go because....well, $350 wheels.  Regardless, they are on my shit list forever.  One positive of the entire fiasco is:  I have official access to the VIA / JWL Wheel Database in Japan.

You can see a little piece of the gold wrap on the pre turbo intake. An of course I wouldn't be me if I didn't post a low resolution pic but you can see just how much glow they create. At certain angles it's actually blinding
