just copy your vin number down off of your car. then go to the pdf and press control + F at the same time it'll bring up a search box. from there just type in your vin number and press find. then presto! :D

Ilb,

First, let me say that I had no idea about the search function for Acrobat.  You've just simplified my life!  For this you get a:

lafun,

I suspect that the color of the car is probably encoded into the VIN, though I don't know what it may be.  Mine is Ti (3235)...I bet if everyone listed their number and their color we could probably find the commonality in the VINS (if there is one) and determine which character is the code for the paint color.

Of those that entered their prod number into the map database, Brentikus has the lowest at 124, the rx7gslse at 705, Tonylop 747, then RODEO at 942! Everyone else is above 1000.

This one is used 15,000 miles:

1541 MIA MIA MS 6P 2004-03-12 JM1NB354340406549

Is for sale at the local Ford dealership in Bowling Green, KY.

I've been meaning to drop by and see what ridiculous price they want for it and then offer to sell them mine at less than that! HAHA! Then drive back to Nashville and buy another one! Think they'd catch on?

Vin number decoding.

I washed the Vin 2005 Vin Number data through Excel and sorted the dat by vin #. There seem to be only 11 different Vinvarieties.

JM1NB354050411113 for example the 0 ( zero ) seems to be the only digit that changes. They range from 0-X. And of course the last 5 digits change. I am assuming they refer to the production run, but could be reffering to something more. Does this help this thread?

Mine has a '9' and is a MIca Black w/ Cloth top

mine is #91 of 1428 born on 8/18/2004.  I think this was the first day of production for the '05 MSMs.  Now resides in Pa!

How about a commemorative plaque for our production numbers.  A lot of other manufacturers do this,  ie. Volkswagon with the 2008 R32's have their plaques (only 5000 produced).  Anyone heard of anything like this for our cars?

Edit* Oh, btw guys the number 8th from the right in a vin number always signifies the year it was built. Well, it has since after 2000, i'm not positive if it was like that back in the '90s and '80s etc.

6 in that slot.

Black Mica, non-GT. Think we can conclude that slot is not determined by paint color.

My last 5 digits are 13268. I notice that mannequin and I both have a 1 in the 5th slot from the end (the first of the other changing slots), and both have black mica.  Could that slot determine paint? Does that fit with others of you?

Thanks for the informative post.  I knew our MSM was #3838, but did not know that it's the 7th to the last one built in '04.  We now have about 8K mi on it and it runs like a charm and makes truly wonderful exhaust sounds now that the full FM turbo-back exhaust is fully broken in after a 2K trip to Monterey, CA and an incredibly fun track day at Laguna Seca.

That is one awesome track to run and while I was a bit tentative with my driving (frankly as an Intermediate driver I was a bit intimidated by that track) I did have an absolute blast despite getting a very gentle tap from behind and spun out while entering turn-4 (no bumper or sheet metal damage but did very slightly bend the left rear Enkei RPF1wheel on the FIA apex curb as I spun over it).  I will be back!!!!

Except for the FM exhaust, the car is stock and is one heck of a nice, fun, and very well balanced machine for road and HPDE days.  Can't wait to get the new 225/45/15 Toyo R888s on the recently delivered 15/8 6UL wheels mounted on the car.  The wheels are black with silver lip and should look great with the Titanium Gray Metallic.

How can 3838 be 7th from the end for 2004 when all of the 4000 cars were built in 2004??

You are of course correct again, Larry.  I did not see the second page in the PDF file and jumped to the unfounded and irrational conclusion that the rest of the cars were not shipped for some reason.  It's hell to get old but I continue to plod happily on, blissfullly unaware of what's going on.

So in the US, there's a total of 5,428 MSM's (2004's and 2005's together)...right?

Is there a list to somewhere to see how many of each color were made in those year in the US? I'm just curious to know since I've got a lava orange one...and I keep hearing that there wasn't a lot of the lava's made...and I have no idea where to find information like that out...any help would definitely be appreciated.  ::)

Is this what you are looking for?  :)

The real question is how many cars on these lists are no longer with us.

What would be cool is if we could get some sort of certification from mazda as to the rarity and your production number. And not just within the 2 years but also within your particular color as well.

I've seen a list floating around with colors by VIN.  The Orange and Black '05 are the most rare.  Red is the most common in both years.  I'm still curious about how many are still on the road.  I don't believe there is a national DMV database so we would need to hack into the records state by state to see which numbers are still registered.  Some went to Canada too.

The Vin count is strictly for US cars AFAIK.  Not even the Canadian cars are included in that list.  As for the color list, I'm pretty sure Mazda had a count but doesn't have a by VIN list for the colors.

See the following thread for the 05 numbers by color:
http://www.mazda-speed.com/forum2/index.php/topic,14394.0.html
(but SMR is correct AFAIK about no VIN list for colors)

Red is the most common in both years.

Actually, Velocity Red is the most rare color for 05, with Tit. Gray the second most rare in 05. Numbers specifically for 05 are in the thread linked above.

The total numbers for the 2 years combined, if an even 2k/2k split in 04 is true, are:
  394  Lava Orange
  413  Black Mica
2255  Velocity Red
2366  Titanium Gray

no idea. it may even be a US one imported to Canada.

Random fact(?): All regular NB's start with VIN JM1NB353xxxx while MSM's start with VIN JM1NB354xxxx

I found this helpful when MSM hunting.

Different numbers here in Australia - we got an extra color (Sunlight Silver) for the '04 model and missed out on the LO for the
'05.

Here's the list for Mazdaspeed down under for those who are curious:

Sunlight Silver 133
Black Mica 13
Titanium Grey 146
Velocity Red 200

For a total of 492

I was actually surprised that mine was such an early production model.

My ECU tune seems to be remarkably trouble free.   :o

Is there a way to check to if the dealer performed an ECU update at some point?

There were no ECU updates for the MSM

The ECUs had several revisions but none were specific to a given model year. There are good ones and bad ones but which are which remains a mystery to the community.

Post by: SilverMiataRacer on May 22, 2013, 05:07:38 PM
I wouldn't word it that way

There were different versions of the ECU but nothing is an update.  You can't go out and get a certain version ECU for your car because it's "better" than the others.

Title: Re: Here's a nice PDF link to Production Numbers for 2004/2005
Post by: mr_hyde on May 22, 2013, 05:22:13 PM
Versions instead of 'revisions' is a better way to put it. Stephanie is the only person who has had her hands on enough ECUs to comment on the differences but those details remain a bit of a mystery. If we knew the part numbers for the good ones, you could target those on a purchase or use the info to understand why your car runs bad.

If we knew the part numbers for the good ones, you could target those on a purchase or use the info to understand why your car runs bad.

But then you get into immobilizer issues.  Honestly I don't think the tune in any of the factory ECUs is worth the time trying to get a "good" one.

Post by: mr_hyde on May 22, 2013, 06:55:18 PM
You must have a good one.  Ex mrs_hyde's and my MSM are two completely different cars.  After driving them back to back, I started modding the black one but with both bone stock it wasn't remotely close to the same power delivery on the butt dyno.

Post by: SilverMiataRacer on May 22, 2013, 06:56:42 PM
I don't have a good one but I just don't think the factory ECU is any good in any of the flavors out there.  Some maybe better than others but I don't think any are worth the hassle of trying to figure them out and get them to work with the immobilizer.
