So at 35k I had my car in the dealership for warranty work.  I had grinding in 3rd and 4th.  Seems the 4 bolts on the shift plate came loose, which is common, and the gears were not being positively engaged.  3rd and 4th were pretty chewed up and some other small stuff was bad.  Well the dealership rebuilt the trans and I got the car back.  3rd was really hard to get into and 4th could be stubborn as well after the rebuild.  Here I am 900miles after the rebuild and 3rd and 4th took a crap again.  I think a guide pin broke for the third and Im not sure what the hell happened to 4th.  I know one other member had the same problem and an acquaintance of  mine had a 04 and had it in three times within the first 3000 miles for the tranny.  So are these trannys worth a crap or what?

I've had no trouble at all with 1-6 but ever since I got my car with 17k on it i've had trouble with reverse. Sometimes when I start her up then try to go into rev with the clutch fully compressed it will grind while going into gear and sometimes just won't go in even when it feels like it should be in gear. I really have no idea what's wrong with mine, but I was wondering the same thing as you, is there a flaw with our trans?

ive had that problem with my reverse, it wont grind, but there are times it wont go into gear, or it will feel like it went in although it really didnt.  ive had this problem since i got the car at 9k miles, and im at 21k now.  a couple people have told me its normal, but its kinda rare/random so i havent talked to a dealer about it cause chances are it wouldnt happen when they went to go try it.

Rev. being a pain in the ass is normal.  It has no synchro and is typically a straight cut gear.  Hence why it whines so loud when in reverse.

Ahh, thank you, that makes sense. What a local tranz shop told me is to start the car, put the shifter in neutral and decompress the clutch, then recrompress it and go into second and then directly to reverse. This seems to help quite a bit and when I do that it usually goes into rev with no problems, but it doesn't always work.

The easiest thing to do about reverse is to put it back in neutral and let the clutch out, step on the clutch again and go into first and then go back into reverse.

There are a lot of the 6 speeds out there and it hasn't been noted that they are a big issue.  They aren't as nice as the 5 speed but they aren't noted to fail.

My dad always told me to throw the clutch in, shift from 1-2 to line the syncros up and it pops right into R every time.

yea thats what my dad always told me too.. it becomes a habit if you do it alot. when i get in my car now i put the clutch in and shift 1to 2 and then to first or reverse depending on the direction i'm going.. that and if any of you have trouble with your clutches id take a look at your master slave cylinder i thought my clutch was going out and i couldn't shift. and it was the slave cyl.

I have had the reverse problem as well.  Worked better when I had the bushings replaced, but has started again.  The shift to neutral, 1st, then reverse works well for me.

That is not a problem but a normal thing.  The reverse is not a gear with syncros so you need to help it get into the gear.  Usually going into another gear first will be the solution.

Ok... that's what I initially heard.  But then some people on these forums claim the 6speed is stronger.  SO... which tranny is the stronger one?

The MSM 6 speed is supposed to have shot peened gears.

yea... but aside from helping with wear and tear, how do the two compare when it comes to putting down over 300whp?

Don't know, the word is the 6 speed is stronger and ours has stronger gears but there is no real proof that I know of.

For those that have a hard time with reverse. Try putting the car into 1st gear, let the clutch out just so the car begins to rock forward. Push clutch to the floor, shift directly into reverse and it should slip right into gear every time. I've tried this on other import trannys as well. This tip has always worked for me.
