I was reading on what kind of primer to use, because I usually do things, then ask questions later... The primer doesn't look like its sticking. I came back and scratched some of it off with my nail. The weird thing is, primer sticks to the anodized finish, doesn't stick to the bare aluminum?

Anyway, here are some good tips:

I think you are right, I like it too! I'm going to hit the wheel with hyper silver paint today, if it looks terrible maybe I'll go back to polishing

That white primered wheel was a complete failure. So far I have tried:

Self etching primer: no good because paint comes off.

Bare aluminum primer: better, but paint still comes off.

Here's a picture of that wheel's result:

Next I will try with no primer.

So here we go, sanded this wheel with 400G then cleaned it with some anti-anodizer wheel cleaner. I used a wire brush on the corners. Continued sanding it with 600G and finally finished it off with 800, I'm a pro at sanding wheels now. Here's what we have:

Weapon of choice:

And paint sticks really well, looks like they were right in saying not to use primer at all, paint isn't scratching off anymore.

First coat:

After letting it dry, I wet sanded and sprayed a second coat, repeated sanding in between coats:

Looks like this one is a winner. Paint looks perfect and it is bullet proof!

Got the tires installed and washed the wheel, paint still looks good. I was expecting the paint to come off at this point but it is still intact.

Decal time!

They've come up really well.

I must admit there's just something about this effect that really works for me though......

At this point anything is better than what I previously had there

That bronze color will go bad if you don't take care of it, lesson learned.

Annnnnd installed! (I know, I hadn't torqued down the lug nuts when I took this pic)

Man, it's definitely a lot of work to prep and paint wheels. I have fun doing this kind of thing but still, if you are undertaking this task, ask for a few days off of work so you can get it all done at once ( lol ) otherwise say good bye to your weekends. I have three more wheels to go........  Tongue

Did you Dupli-Color Clear coat them? Just wondering cause I was thinking of trying the "Black Chrome" Dupli-Color, which is a 2 part system.

Ninja edit:

No I did not clear coat, definitely post pics here I wanted to try the black chrome also! I heard using clear coat dulls/yellows/ darkens the color.
