On the Gap

« on: August 27, 2015, 01:41:01 AM »

Just performed a quick test on new Apple Play head unit "Kenwood Excelon DDX9902S"

Prior to purchase, I quizzed sales personnel and Kenwood technical help line.

I want an Apple Play compatible HU that properly controls the power antenna.

Both Crutchfield and Kenwood assured me that was what the antenna control lead was for.

Apparently, the antenna lead is to ensure the antenna is always up ( incase you might want to listen to the radio ).

As opposed to raising the antenna 'when' you engage the radio functions.

Back to the UPS truck it will go.

That's weird. I pulled my power antenna out so I'm not sure, but don't these antennas only need a power signal to raise them. Then if there is no signal, it lowers on it's own? On older aftermarket radio setups I just would use the 'remote' wire to trigger the power antenna if equipped. Seemed to work fine for me.

I'd rather have the technology work for me , rather than me having to work around the technology.

My solution for this was to replace the power antenna with a fixed stubby one.  Looks much better IMO.

Who needs technology?

My solution was to put a rocker switch in the circuit. I mounted it on the kick panel. I don't care to be at full mast, when I'm running on the track.

Yes, as much as I don't want too the manual switch seems to be the solution.

Even though I hate having to work 'around' technology. It may be the only way to get the other high tech functionality.

Did you end up keeping your DDX9902S?   I just ordered a DNX692 with the Garmin Nav.  Wanted a volume knob and NAV where no cell signal goes.  The Ozarks is not the place to depend on a cell signal for nav.  I want to go where no cell signal goes.
