I found a small black button beside the hood release lever. it looks to be aftermarket/not original and nothing happens when I push it.
anybody know of a mod that involves installing anything like this?

Do you have an aftermarket alarm? If so, valet mode option?

I'm not sure it's aftermarket. There was a very undocumented OEM alarm system.

I've got the same button. I messed with it a couple of years ago, but I found that if you held the button in for a couple of seconds (I don't remember if the key had to be turned), you could make some changes. Seems as though you could change if the horn beeped when you locked the car and stuff like that. I'm sure there is more to it than that, but those are my memories. There may have been a manual for the alarm, but I don't have my flash drive with me to look.

As noted above, this button is the Emergency Override Button for the optional "Security System." Following is some verbiage from the NC Security System manual. I've verified that functionality is identical in a similarly equipped NB.
Emergency Override Button - The security system can be disarmed if the security system malfunctions.
The Emergency Override Button The Emergency Override Button is used in conjunction with the vehicle ignition to disarm the security system in the event a malfunction occurs.
Emergency Override Procedure In the unlikely event that the security system cannot be disarmed or the vehicle does not start, the following procedure can be used to override the system. 1. Enter the vehicle (the horn may begin sounding). 2. Turn the ignition to the ON position. 3. Press the Emergency Override Button. The security system is now disarmed.
Special Instructions for Low Vehicle Battery Problems If you are attempting to start your vehicle when the battery is low, the security system may disable the starter due to low operating voltage. To eliminate this problem, press and hold the Emergency Override button while turning the ignition (see page 4, Emergency Override Procedure).
Arm & Disarm Horn Chirps The security system can be programmed to arm and disarm silently, or with audible horn chirps. Turn the ignition on and then off, then quickly press the Emergency Override Button 3 times. If you hear... ...This means 1 chirp... ...you have turned audible chirps on 2 chirps... ...you have turned audible chirps off

The first rule of using the Emergency Override Button, is that you do not talk about the Emergency Override Button.
