Can anyone explain the problems with Bose speakers and a different brand head unit?  If I understand correctly, they are low voltage and won't work with most other units, but that there may be a way around that.

Speakers are rated in ohms not voltage.  The Bose speakers are 1/2 ohm speakers.  Normal car stereo are 4 or 8 ohm.  There are many different approaches to using bose speakers with other stereos.  The simplest is probably to feed the stereo units preamp output into the stock Bose amps.  There are many posts in this section of the forum offering you choices of ideas.

I should have written impedance, but on another note, I looked for a forum on audio/video /electronics and didn't see one.  I thought it might be my Firefox browser but I don't see it in Internet Explorer either.  I only got here by clicking on the link in your post about moving the thread.
