http://www.sylfex.com/products/AuxMod/It's not the most expensive modification I've made, but it was one of the first, and it's still one of my favorites. Works perfectly 10+ years later. Sound quality is just fine for a ragtop with a loud exhaust. It basically simulates the factory tape deck. So you press the Tape button on factory head unit, the display reads "TAPE", and whatever audio you supply to the 3.5mm cable connected to it plays through. Fairly obviously, if you already have a tape deck, it'll have to go.

That's what I have. Really basic but works great. I've had mine for 8 or 9 years and installed another in my daughter's Protege5 about 4 years ago. Install is easy. You need to supply your own mini-stereo cable. I ran mine under the console and have it emerging by the remote trunk/gas levers.

I put a GTA unit in my wife's car (not a Miata). It is slicker than the Sylfex unit in that it integrates with iPhones and iPods pretty well and allows some control over IOS devices via the car's stereo controls. Only minor quibble is that the GTA unit is always supplying power to the iPhone/Pod, even when the car is turned off, so there is a steady draw on the car's battery when the car is turned off if IOS device is still connected.

What if device is not connected, does it draw power?

You can get an aftermarket head unit with an Aux In feature and everything you need to install it for <$100. IMHO this gives a higher quality sound than the stock Bose unit.

No. Edit: oops. Seems like you meant the GTA. The Auxmod does not. You can get an aftermarket head unit with an Aux In feature and everything you need to install it for <$100. IMHO this gives a higher quality sound than the stock Bose unit.
With all funny Bose speakers in our car, it's a little more involved and expensive than just replacing the head unit. (see "bosectomy") Still a reasonable option, but I've never liked how aftermarket units look or work, so I've stuck with the factory unit.

I bought my car with what I assume is the AUX MOD. It has a mini plug jack input and plays on "tape" works great.
