I had the battery disconnected for some other work, and I don't know if that caused this problem. The radio works fine but I get no response to any CD input. It was playing a CD OK but when I hit the insert button to put in another disk it just stopped. It won't respond to insert or eject and won't play the discs that are in it. The manual has some instructions about how to eject a bad disk but none of them work. There is usually a manual release mechanism on similar players but I can't find one on the Bose head unit. I guess I'll have to pull the unit out of the dash but I wish there was an easier way.

An audio repair guy I have used in the past says the older Bose units will burn out the CD motor if you use burned CDs in them, which I have done. He's looking up the cost of a new motor. I may just try to pick up a used unit.

The radio is built such that the cd module can be replaced by anyone with reasonable mechanical skills. I think my first step would be to take the module off the radio and see if there is a mechanical jam that can be rectified. If not, at the very least you aren't limited to just the Bose units as far as finding a replacement CD module.

That's what I plan to do when I get time. I was thinking about replacing the head unit with a GPS-equipped one, but I like the 6-CD deck, and Garmin has a GPS with hands-free phone, bluetooth and backup camera for about $400. I figure I'll ram mount it and hard wire it in.

I'm finding used ones with the carbon fiber finish are pretty scarce on the used market. Can anyone advise if the faceplate can be fitted to a CD changer module with black faceplate?

Whaddaya know. I started it up and the CD player spat out the three discs it had been holding and now works fine. I'm only using store-bought discs in it since I now know that ones you burn will ultimately destroy the thing. Of course I know mechanical things don't fix themselves so I'll see if it continues to work. If it dies again holding some of my prized CDs, I'll take a crowbar to it.
