Do it right or do it over...

« on: March 14, 2016, 06:53:36 PM »

All - I was replacing the shifter bushing with a Miata Roadster Derlin one ( thumup) and found that my lower boot, I think it is called a dust cover and one of the wave washers that locks into the teflon ring was destroyed.  Where can I get those and what are the part numbers?

The dealer and look at the top boot too as it's probably bad also.  Those both are about 3 year items.

I got my last set through 5x racing.  They have a  whole kit that has washers and all.

Thats perfect - just what I needed.  The dealer was quoting me $90 for the lower boot and the one claw washer alone.  Thank you

It's clear the dealer your working with is a bit of a crook.  If you ever need a dealer part check the dealers listed in the Marketplace at Miata.net

This is the kit I got a few months ago from the king of Miata's.  Arrived in 2-3 days. OEM parts $99

Took about an hour to install.  There are some nice articles out there on how to remove the pin if you need to change the lower ones too.

I went a 'slightly' different direction on pin removal.

I was not able to hold a socket in place to allow the pin to be pushed out by the vice grips.

I was however able to hold a 12mm box wrench there and allow the rear pin to be started out then screwdriver as instructions state.

Tape on box wrench to allow pin re-insertion

My top turrent was loose and I took it off to inspect for wear, cleaning up oil leakage & putting gasket goop on it as I didn't have a fresh gasket, drove the pin back with a pin punch and it moves pretty easy. Bolted it back in, dropped in the rebuilt & greased shift lever and bottom boot and used an open end wrench between the edge of the floor pan and the turrent and pressed it back in. Before it was loose and would routinely drop into reverse gate going from 5th to 6th.  Sweet minty fresh shifting now!  tool

BTW I got my kit at Moss Miata for $73.99.
The bushing kit is OEM Mazda w/aftermarket boots. I've heard the aftermarket boots like they use last longer than the OEM ones. Anybody know if this is true?

I got a full kit from Moss with upper and lower boots with washers and bushing for $90 or around that much.
