I'm running 225/45-15 BFG Rivals on Advanti 15x9.
I bought these pre-mounted from FM.
I picked up a nail so i took the tire to Discount Tire (where I've always gotten good service).
They said that they will dismount and repair the tire but they won't remount the tire because it is too narrow.
I see that Tire Rack's specs for that tire say 7"-8.5" rim width.
Anyone have advice on what shop will work on this?
Particularly in the Minneapolis area.
Thx

So take it somewhere else?

Or raise hell at that discount tire?

If they really wanna be like that they shouldn't of started patching the tire before they realized the width of the rim and tire doesn't meet what the computer is saying. Honestly I would give them a ton of crap about it and demanded they fix it. Or demand a refund.

Yeah, for sure I'm taking it somewhere else.
I just asked to see if anyone else here running these sizes knows of a shop that will work on them before I start calling all over.

In their defense, they have not yet dismounted the tire so I'm just picking it back up unrepaired.

I won't raise hell because if they don't want to work on them then that's their prerogative.

I also put this out there as a caution for anyone who is thinking of buying 15X9 wheels.

I had the same issue with DT here in PDX.     I took advantage of one their specials on E-bay and bought a set of AD08s 205-50-15 for less than $ 85/tire.  When I took my 15 x 8 6ULs  to them , they would not mount them , they actually took a ruler and measured the rim width.   They said it was a corporate decision based on liability as the tire manufacturer sets the size limit for rim widths.

If they were to violate that specification, then they could be liable if you had an accident.  Blame the exploding Firestone tires on the Ford Explorers  a while back.

Solution: I went to a race shop in town and had it done for $25/wheel.   Kind of a hassle but knowing the process, I would still use DT for their pricing on tires and just schedule the mounting elsewhere.

I mount 225-45-15 track tires on my 15x9 rims all the time and never had an issue.  I also have a local tire guy who I use who is not associated with a large company.  He actually specializes is large chrome rims and things along those lines.  I figures if he can mount very low profile tires on large rims, surely he could mount my 225 tires on my 9" rims.  cheesy  He has always provided me great service and does a great job.  You might check to see if there is a shop similar to this that you could use.

Blame the lawyers

Costco won't sell you tires that aren't OEM size for the vehicle.

What everyone said; liability exposure far exceeds potential incremental sales so most (if not all) larger chains will likely not do it for you if it is outside specs.  It has nothing to do with the local branch folks, it's their company policy established by their HQ.

I'd look for smaller and independent tire shop.

Different topic for a different thread: these guidelines are obviously in place for a reason, either safety and/or performance related.  I am no expert in this field, but makes me pause to want to do more research on the topic...

I did some research before I bought them including talking to a tech at FM about 15x8 vs. 15x9.
I ordered them over the phone from FM from the same tech who said they have lots of people running this combination.
I believe that they came from Tire Rack via FM.

I searched all the usual forums before ordering them and saw plenty of racer-types using this combo but I never saw anyone say they had trouble getting service work done on them.
Live and learn.

I'm starting to wish I'd bought the 15x8s so I'd have three tire options instead of just one. Cheesy
I guess I'll be going to the Maxxis 245/40-15 when these wear out.

I can think of at least 4 steetable tires in that size.  Rival S, Hankook R-S3, Toyo R1R, and the Kumho V720, which performed well if not amazingly in the new GRM tire test.

For best results, you'd probably want 10"-wide wheels for the 245-wide Maxxis, but at least nobody should complain about trying to mount them on 9s.

Stick with 225 tires on the 9" rim and just find another tire mount shop.  It is a well know and popular combination.

Blame the lawyers

...and blame the stanced crowd that puts 185 tires on 10" wheels (not sure exactly but I've seen some stupid stretching!).  We're just trying to stiffen the sidewalls...

I will do that... I talked to a bunch of people today who affirmed your opinion.
I was just temporarily bummed out this AM when the guy at Discount Tire was just so smug with his "it's not the right tire".  First negative experience I've had at DT ever.

I was also a little taken aback to find out that I could be out on the road and have trouble finding a shop who would work on that combo because I've driven the car through at least eleven states like this.
I guess I'll be packing a tire plug kit too now just in case.
