Really? I live right next to the interstate so the topless 80mph cruises are common for me. Even with my exhaust and no rear speakers, I have no problem with the sound quality.

Tremble - 0
Bass - +2
Fade - 0
Balance - 0
Top Dwn 3 Setting
Volume - 20

 afro
I use very similar settings.  I have the bass at 0, but it's there because when I turn it up (I cruise at 24 with the top down at 80mph) i get some distortion.  I don't recall where I have the Top Down setting though.  It might be off. Sad

Guys

If you read your owners manual on page 6-20 it explains the use of the top up/top down.  Unfortuately it doesn't make a lot of sense but the  Top Down settings means you have the top closed and the Top Up means you are driving topless.

I was messing with the top up/top down setting on my way home this evening and figured it was backwards as you stated.  I had the top up since it was cold (my passenger is a pansy).

When I first got the car I used some of my reference CDs and found that Top Down = 2, treble =0 and bass =0 gave the closest to "flat" that we're likely to get out of the system, regardless if the top is up or down.

I am thinking of replacing the whole system, with an alpine HU and probably Focal speakers and some sort of an amp, I also plan on installing some sort of sound damping material in the doors as I am not planning on AX anytime soon.  On a side note has anyone removed the windblocker/rear speakers and if so is there any hardware left on the car?

from hearing ive always noticed top up setting increases treble sounds while top down setting increases base sounds more.

i generally ride around at +6treble, +2-4 base, topdown3  all the time anyhow though regardless. i have two 10" trunk woofers though because i actually like real base not that weak buump you get from the factory speakers. doesnt matter if im listening to the Stones,  Pink Floyd, Rob Zombie, Hendrix, or even Emenem.  afro gots to feel the beat man!  beer

I removed my windblocker when I installed my rollbar and the only thing left is a small square hole in the carpet.

I put the clearwaters in shortly after purchase as I was not happy with the muddy equalization.  It's plug and play, easy enough that even I could do it and as long as you dont put the screwdriver through the speaker, you're good to go.  I was very pleased at the difference though obviously its an absolutely subjective experience.  And the folks at clearwater are very helpful if you do need it.  Got them on sale for $100 off and for me they've been worth it.

Are these the rear speakers you're talking about?  If so, do you have a link (I did not find them on the Clearwater audio web page) to these speakers so that I could purchase a pair.  Would the installation be fairly easy for those of us who don't work with hand tools for a living?

I looked at my owner's manual and says top up is top up and top dn is the top down, not backwards like you indicate.  But the way the system reacts seems to be opposite.

Well then your book is different than mine.

My book clearly says top up is for when the top is open and that top down is for when the top is closed.

Mine is an 05 MSM and in my manual, it's explained on page 6-22.  Explaining the TOP UP modes (3) " Use when the convertible top is closed.  Three levels are available".   Explaining the TOP DWN modes ( 3) " Use when the convertible top is open.  Three levels are available."

I have an early vintage 2004 manual and it doesn't say that.

Bose or not I foud the stock system to weak for my tastes. I went with a Pioneer HU stock speakers and a light weight sub in the trunk. I get a little bass fade at high volume from the stock Bose speakers up front, but tweaking the settings compensatest for that. The Pioneer sounds MUCH clearer and has a much more powerful sound, very pleased. I lose the 6 disc capability and the smooth OEM look, but I gain MP3 CDs and 100% better sound.
